Redheaded women have long been a symbol of dangerous desire in movies, books and music. Lozz Benson aka That Red Head is staking a proud claim as the latest in a long line of flame-haired femme fatales by breaking stereotypes and being the creative force behind the music.
In most cases you will find the lead vocalist of a band up front and centre stage performing star jumps and belting lyrics out on their knees. But to find Lozz you just have to look a bit further, back behind the drums, where you can gaze upon the front woman with her mop of red hair - driving the band with infectious energy and sultry vocals. Lozz is joined by her trusty sidekicks Cam Kinsey (Big Blind Ray, CK & the 45s) on Guitar and Tom Wade (The Pigs, Arabesk) on Double Bass.
“Lozz is a real entertainer on stage. She is the centre of attention, driving the band from behind the drums with leadership and great panache, as well as singing flawlessly and entertaining the dancing crowd in her energetic and unique way.” - Jim Moginie, Midnight Oil
Benson cites influences as diverse as Gene Krupa, Loretta Lynn, Marilyn Manson and Karen Carpenter and has become the rare performer driven to make their talent as diverse as their taste. At the start of 2018 That Red Head released their first 16 track album with songs recorded by acclaimed engineer/producer Richard Belkner (Jack Ladder, PVT, Thirsty Merc) at Free Energy Device Studios, as well as working with Producer Brent Clark at Oceanic Studios.
Although the tracks are influenced by heavy blues, rockabilly and country music, Lozz enjoys writing songs with a modern twist by focusing on strong chord progressions and catchy melodies. “For me when I write, it’s about drawing the most potent elements from all the type of music I love. The emotional directness and infectious melodies of pop music I love to sing, the swampy grooves and shuffles of blues and country I love to play on the drums, and the energy wrapped up in all of it that gets people on the dance floor.”.
Before deciding to front her own band Lozz played and toured with artists including Urthboy, Pat Capocci, The Drey Rollan Band, Hedgefund, Drummer Queens, Scotch and Soda & Sirens Big Band.
Since forming in 2016 That Red Head has supported The Snowdroppers, Gay Paris, Papa Pilko and the Binrats, Jesse Redwing, Jason Walker, James Van Cooper and Slim Jim Phantom (The Stray Cats).
Last year Lozz also won Drumteks AUDW Best female drummer award – winning endorsements from by DW, Promark and Evans as well as being featured in Australia’s Drum Scene Magazine.
Lozz has previously collaborated with artists such as Paul Kelly, Steve Smyth, All Our Exes Live in Texas, Green Mohair Suits, Chris D’Rozario (Brian Setzer) Sandy Evans (OAM, The Catholics), Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil), Zoe Hauptmann (Katie Noonan, Neil Finn) and Ryan Hazel (The Fumes). She supported The Darkness with Sydney punk outfit Rackett last year on their tour of Australia, as well as playing shows with Aria nominated vocalist Fanny Lumsden.
That Red Head has been bringing their original music to festivals such as Lady Luck, Throttle Roll, Chromefest, The Fifties Fair, Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival, Sydney Rock’n’Roll Alternative Markets as well as hosting and establishing the ‘Women of Rockabilly Night’ and ‘Rockabilly Night of Mayhem’ at local Sydney Venues Miss Peaches and Lazybones. The trio is kicking off 2018 by playing at Tamworth Country Music Festival in January. Make sure you get to a live show soon!
