Sarah Koppen is an emerging progressive fingerstyle guitarist from Brisbane, Australia who blends classical, funk, flamenco, two-handed tapping, and percussive techniques into amazing solo guitar material. She is currently building quite a buzz around herself from the ground up via busking to ever-growing crowds in Brisbane and coverage in Guitar World and on Ultimate Guitar. Her fiery playing style draws comparisons to Tommy Emmanuel, Andy McKee, and Michael Hedges but Koppen already has her own uniqueness as an artist and is clearly forging her own path.
Sarah first picked up a guitar at age 12 and was put firmly on her course after seeing Tommy Emmanuel play at age 15. Now, at 26, she has developed into a musician who can draw a sidewalk crowd big enough to block traffic and quickly became known in Brisbane for doing exactly that. She is still performing, producing, and teaching guitar there but is well on the way to international attention. She has also studied audio production and contemporary music and adds to her individuality by incorporating elements of electronic music into her guitar playing. She has her debut EP set for a 2018 release.
Sarah Koppen is the best acoustic guitarist you’ve never heard of but that status is sure to be short-lived. Her combination of skills and style will soon bring her to wider acclaim and a larger audience. She is already a complete and compelling musician and will continue to expand and develop her talent in the years ahead. Fans of top-tier guitar playing will want to catch up to her now, while she is still at street level.
