Born and raised in the foothills of North Carolina, I was brought up in the musical world of blues, old time country, and traditional gospel music. Iwas fortunate enough to experience hearing both delta and piedmont blues live as a teenager. That music has been entrenched in my being ever since. I moved to Australia in the late 80’s and was amazed to find an incredible array of blues artists in Melbourne who were keeping the genre alive. I found myself running a blues venue called Muddy Waters and it was here that my musical journey began. My passion was slide guitar and my mentors were the likes of James Bridges from Collard Greens and Gravy, Skip Sail, Steve Plater, Alex Burns and CW Stoneking. Our after hour lock in Jams were my school of learning and I was lucky enough to start performing as I learned from these greats. I was asked to join a newly formed band called Dirty Rivers and it was with this band that I became a true muso. We played all over Victoria and were the Motorcycle Grand Prix’s favorite band at Phillip Island for several years running. I began playing solo gigs as well and also began a down and dirty Gospel choir called South of the River with Anne Marie Sharry. Between the 3 acts I was involved with many a festival including the Port Fairy festival, Queenscliff Festival, Apollo Bay, The Frankston Guitar Festival, and a regular at the Bruthen Blues Festivals. Life was becoming a musical dream until I was hit with the words no one wants to hear. Cancer. But even with my huge struggle to beat it I played and sang as much as I could and I know it was instrumental in winning that battle. As soon as I was able I began a project that I promised myself I would do if I survived and that was to make my own CD playing the songs I grew up with as well as some contemporary alternative blues and roots music including some I had written. The result was a CD called Ain’t got the Blues and features the dear friends and musicians that had brought me to this point. It was a funfilled amazing project and its Launch was my dream come true. That dream was even surpassed when the CD won 3 Awards at the next years MBAS Blues awards where I won best debut CD. Best female vocalist and tied with my icons Collard Greens and Gravy for best CD!
