About Me

Jess Loh has got two feet in two camps. One foot in the hustle and bustle of the medical world and another in a whimsical space where music is created. She was born in KL, Malaysia and spent her formative years in Ipoh. Her first instrument was the piano but fell in love with the guitar when she discovered her sister’s John Mayer’s “Heavier Things” album. She immersed herself in guitar from then on, and mainly honed her skills being in a church band.

She discovered her love for songwriting later in life while being in Gippsland (VIC, Australia) for her first year of medical school. From there, she found joy in live performance, and pursued it as best she could amidst the studying commitments, busking at the Fitzroy Market, and playing at the Exford Hotel in Melbourne. She also played several gigs in KL (Laundry Bar and Merdekarya) and her hometown, Ipoh.

Fast forward a few years and she is now a doctor based in Melbourne, releasing her debut EP “Alight” in the final year of her medical school. She is due to release her second EP, called “About That Time” in August 2018. This EP is a window to the roller coaster of her experiences along the way, and speaks of feelings of frustration, loss and joy.

Her influences include Sara Bareilles, Vance Joy and Julien Baker, and is evident in her music, where she combines pop and folk sensibilities with raw, emotional lyrics
