Yes that’s right fellow music lovers, it’s that time of year again where we count down to the entertainment spectacle and sounds of the Passport To Airlie Band Competition. With Newcastle being one of the hosts of this national comp since 2014, Passport To Airlie has become something of an institution for many many Novocastrian live music lovers. The comp has also given dozens of upcoming artists their time to shine by providing a platform (and a stage) for them to strut their stuff and showcase their musical talents in front of hundreds of music fans, all whilst competing for some truly fantastic prizes.

Taking place over six sensational weeks, Passport To Airlie will see four acts taking part in four heats, four acts competing in the Semi Final, and five acts will eventually make their way to the Grand Final. The winners of the Grand Final not only receive a cash prize of $1000, but 4 nights accommodation at Airlie Beach, and V.I.P tickets to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music, where they will also compete in the National Finals of the Passport To Airlie (with the winner of this getting to play on the main stage of the Airlie Beach Festival of Music the following year).

That’s not all though, because you too can also be a winner during this competition... By simply spending $5 or more at the bar or bistro, you’ll go into the draw to win a brand new Fender Stratocaster (pictured below)! Also, regardless if you receive a prize, you’ll still be winning, as you’ll get to hear some of the finest fresh talent anywhere around, all for free! Oh, and what talent you’ll see! As each and every year, even the most unfamiliar of artists soon become fan favourites with those attending any given heat of Passport To Airlie.

On a personal level, many of the artists I’ve seen each and every year during Passport To Airlie are now among my favourites, and I have relished watching their careers blossom ever since. Oh, and I’m not just talking about the winners of the comps either, I also mean many of the musos who unfortunately didn’t get through to any of the finals. The caliber of talent truly is that freakin’ high. So make sure to clear your schedule each and every Sunday, get along to the oh so sensational setting of The Stag & Hunter between 4pm and 9pm, support the finest in live original music, and see a whole new array of artists before they’re famous.
See you at The Stag!
